چکیده

Oscillating chemical bulk reactions of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) type usually show a welldefined periodical color change representing the underlying chemical reactions. Models including up to more than 50 coupled reactions have been developed to describe the BZ-reaction in detail, however, typically a much simpler set of equations is used (i.e. the Brüsselator, the FKN, or the FitzHugh–Nagumo model). There are various types of oscillating reactions with color changes, for example, from transparent to yellow (Ce catalyzed), or from blue to red (Ferroin catalyzed). In equilibrium systems and in models each color-change is usually a simple curve with one maximum, and the oscillation is stable in time. We have investigated the detailed structure of the intrinsic optical signal (IOS) of a BZreaction in-depth and found, in a nonstationary ferroin catalyzed BZ-reaction, a much more complex optical behavior. Amazingly, this IOS with its detailed time dependence very much resembles electrical and optical signals from important neuronal processes. These are especially the sodium current during action potentials (AP) and the retinal spreading depression (SD). The time-scale of all these processes can be different by decades. This principal similarity, however, points to a deeper common theoretical basis of all these processes as assumed up to now, and makes the presented type of BZ-reaction an ideal model for a variety of neurophysiological signals, although the mechanisms are strictly different.

Tutorial Review: Simulation of Oscillating Chemical Reactions Using Microsoft Excel Macros

Oscillating reactions are one of the most interesting topics in chemistry and analytical chemistry. Fluctuations in concentrations of one the reacting species (usually a reaction intermediate) create an oscillating chemical reaction. In oscillating systems, the reaction is far from thermodynamic equilibrium. In these systems, at least one autocatalytic step is required. Developing an instinctiv...

Pattern Formation in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reaction with Photochemical Global Feedback

We have found a variety of oscillating patterns in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction-diffusion system with global negative feedback. Bulk oscillations and wave patterns arise at low values of the feedback strength. When the feedback exceeds a critical value, cluster patterns arise. Besides the standing, irregular, and localized clusters observed earlier, we have found new types of clusters...

Autonomous Oscillation of Polymer Chains Induced by the Belousov–Zhabotinsky Reaction

We investigated the self-oscillating behaviors of two types of polymer chains induced by the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. One consisted of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and the Ru catalyst of the BZ reaction, and the other consisted of NIPAAm, the Ru catalyst, and acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) with a negatively charged domain as a solubility control site. A comparison o...

Design of Self-Oscillating Gels and Application to Biomimetic Actuators

As a novel biomimetic polymer, we have developed polymer gels with an autonomous self-oscillating function. This was achieved by utilizing oscillating chemical reactions, called the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction, which is recognized as a chemical model for understanding several autonomous phenomena in biological systems. Under the coexistence of the reactants, the polymer gel undergoes spo...

Self-Oscillating Structural Polymer Gels

Self-oscillating polymer gel has become a distinguished class of smart soft materials. Here we fabricated and demonstrated a self-oscillating structural gel network with the incorporation of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The structural polymer gel oscillates at a macroscopic level with remarkably faster kinetics compared to a normal gel of similar chemical compositions. The structural...
